The small northern town of Churchill, located on the western shores of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, is set to become a major destination for expedition cruising.

Perfectly aligning with the Beluga Whale season (from July to August 2025), Churchill offers travellers an unparalleled experience of the Arctic’s natural beauty, wildlife, and rich history.

With the advent of expedition cruising in 2025, Churchill’s position as a gateway to the arctic regions is becoming even more significant with two expedition ships visiting in July and August including Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Nature and Silversea’s Silver Endeavour, perfectly aligned with Beluga Whale viewing season.

Expedition cruises to Churchill offer guests a rare opportunity to explore some of the world’s most pristine wilderness. Visitors may choose to embark on guided tours that highlight the area’s rich history, wildlife, and environment. Highlights include:

  • Beluga Whale Viewing: Churchill is world-famous for its beluga whale migrations, with the expedition cruising season being a prime time to witness these majestic whales in the Churchill River estuary.
  • Tundra and Wildlife Safari: Travellers can explore the vast tundra, home to a wealth of wildlife, including arctic foxes and migratory birds. It’s still early season but there may also be polar bear sightings on the tundra.
  • Indigenous Culture and Heritage: Visitors will learn about the local Indigenous cultures, with opportunities to engage with the community and discover centuries of tradition.
  • Northern Lights: Churchill’s position under the Auroral oval makes it an ideal spot for viewing the spectacular Aurora Borealis.

Churchill is already renowned amongst nature lovers and adventurers for polar bear sightings in September and October, now with the arrival of purpose-built expedition ships, this remote Canadian destination is even more accessible for to those eager to experience the unspoiled landscapes of the North and experience beluga whales in prime viewing season.

The expedition cruise industry is dedicated to sustainable travel, ensuring that the untouched beauty of Churchill remains protected for generations to come. The cruise lines operate under strict environmental guidelines and work with local stakeholders to maintain the delicate balance between tourism and conservation.
