You’d be forgiven for thinking that nothing good has ever come out of someone wearing budgie smugglers, however, you’d be wrong.
Fintech company WISE has teamed up with The Inspired Unemployed’s Liam Moore to create a limited-edition pair of Budgy Smugglers.
Unlike normal budgie smugglers that don’t leave much room for… much, this special pair has a pocket in which wearers can keep their Wise card.
The pocket is not just for show. It is there to stop Aussies from making a very costly mistake.
New research from YouGov commissioned by Wise found that 80 per cent of Aussie millenials are making the very costly mistake of using their Australian debit (43 per cent) or credit (36 per cent) card when overseas. As a result, they are losing a fortune in hidden fees.
Using a travel card – such as Wise – can help Aussies save up to 85 per cent on fees when travelling abroad.
In celebration of the thrifty budgie smugglers, Moore, who you may have seen in hit show the Inspired Unemployed spoke to Travel Weekly about his most memorable and embarrassing travel moments.
What is your most embarrassing travel story?
“One of the most embarrassing things I’ve done was in the Maldives, a big group of us went recently. On the day we got there we went out surfing and snorkeling all day. I had sunscreen on, but I knew I was getting burned – I just didn’t realise that my eyes got burned. For four days after I felt like I had sand in my eyes. I could not see, and I had to wear these really, really dark sunglasses.
“I pretty much had to wear these glasses the whole time. I couldn’t take them off in any situation so I’m wearing them in all the photos we took. I was wearing these glasses even at night.”
What is your favourite travel destination?
“Canada. I lived there for two years and I loved it – my friends are so sick of hearing me talk about it. I love the hiking, the snow and the seasons. It’s an amazing place.”
Have you ever been caught without money whilst on your travels?
“Yes. I was halfway through a Japanese road trip with a bunch of friends when I noticed I was running out of money pretty quick. We were in places that were far from anywhere – in tiny little towns where it’s very hard to connect with people there because none of them speak any English.
“I didn’t have a SIM card. My phone wasn’t connected. So, I was trying to get Wi-Fi so I could message my Mum and borrow money.
“I ended up buying all the cheapest things, trying to find all the deals and all the specials, and then spent two and a half weeks just doing that throughout Japan.”
If you crossed paths with an Aussie abroad, would you try and make friends with them or walk the other way?
“I would definitely try and make friends with them. The majority of Australians you meet around the world are all great people. We all have a very good sense of humor. And we’re all pretty fun.”
