The Maldives has hit the mark of one million tourists for 2023 a month ahead of last year’s achievement, indicating progress towards President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s goal of 1.8 million tourists by year’s end.
As of mid-July, top sources of visitors to the Maldives were Russia, India, the UK, China, and Germany, with most surpassing pre-pandemic arrival numbers.
June 2023, Australia has managed to reclaim its place among the top ten source markets for tourism in the Maldives. More specifically, the island nation has recorded over 18,000 arrivals from Australia.
In June 2019, the Maldives welcomed around 20,000 Australians, a figure that closely matches the recent June 2023 data.
The resurgence in Australian tourist arrivals in the Maldives is particularly noteworthy as it indicates a strong recovery from the effects of the global pandemic.
The numbers are nearing their pre-pandemic levels, showing resilience in the Australian outbound tourism market. The return to the top 10 ranking also signifies that Australia’s contribution to the Maldivian tourism industry is back on track.
