The Tasman Hotel has announced the development of Lumina, a new world-class event destination set to bring the hotel’s globally celebrated brand of luxury to events in Tasmania.

Located in prestigious Parliament Square and overlooking Hobart’s historic waterfront, Lumina is poised to transform the events landscape and address the growing demand for a venue that is both versatile and captivating. In an architectural feat, Lumina is remarkably column-free, making it a clear-span event space designed for openness and unobstructed visibility.

Combining the understated and anticipatory service that has seen The Tasman named among The World’s 50 Best Hotels, and the culinary identity that has made Peppina Restaurant and Mary Mary bar acclaimed venues, Lumina features personalised events and the full flavour of Tasmanian personality and produce.

“This project marks an exciting chapter for The Tasman, one which I know will bring new opportunities to share our destination with global explorers,” The Tasman general manager Carolyn Smith said.

“This striking new event space is a symbol of our enduring aspiration to showcase hospitality excellence in Tasmania. To delight guests – from event organisers seeking rare and wild incentive destinations, to individuals searching for a trusted venue for life’s most meaningful events.”

Upon completion, Lumina will be a distinguished events destination, transitioning seamlessly between event styles; corporate events to weddings, gala dinners to conferences, cocktail parties to meetings. With pre- and primary function areas, it is designed to host 220 for a cocktail reception or seat 150 cabaret and 200 banquet style.

“The addition of LUMINA to Hobart’s business events offering secures our place as a world-class international incentive destination,” Business Events Tasmania chief executive officer Marnie Craig said.

“Business events are worth $3.5 trillion globally, and $21 billion in Australia. Tasmania continues to grow its share, particularly in the lucrative corporate and incentive market, where incentive events command an average spend of $1,347 per delegate, per day.

“Our island offers incentive travel planners immersive itineraries blending wild beauty, ancient landscapes, and refined craftsmanship. It affords delegates the chance to unplug in remarkable style. These experiences aren’t just scenic – they’re sensorial, soul-restoring, and deeply Tasmanian.”

Tasmania continues to build its reputation as a standout destination for business events, with the local state government recently announcing an additional $1.2million investment into Business Events Tasmania to boost the industry across the state as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

Design and construction

JGS Property engaged fjcstudio, the architects behind The Tasman, to design a distinctive venue that complements its surrounds and enhances the Square’s amenity.

The design utilises the highest-quality Tasmanian materials and craftsmanship, in line with The Tasman’s commitment to excellence. The mass-engineered timber structure is comprised solely of Tasmanian Plantation Oak, while Tasmanian Oak is showcased in the bespoke joinery. Both timbers are locally grown, harvested and processed in Tasmania before being supplied to manufacturers interstate.

Project Management is being undertaken by Light Box, and SHAPE Tasmania is delivering Lumina’s construction and full fit-out.

The employment impact of the project is significant, comprising SHAPE employees and more than 20 design and specialist consultancy firms engaged across Tasmania and interstate. In total, an estimated 187 Tasmanian jobs will be supported in the construction of the project and 31 Tasmanian jobs created. In an investment into Tasmania’s future workforce, two apprentices have been engaged to work and learn through their involvement in the construction.

Bookings

With project completion expected in mid-2026, The Tasman is now accepting Lumina enquiries for events from July 2026 onwards.
