These are the best cities to raise a family with three Aussie metropolis making the ranks in the top 20!

Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have all made it into the top twenty cities to raise a family, with the three sharing almost equal scores.

The top twenty cities for families were announced after hundreds of parents had their say on what makes a city great for raising a family. They were scaled according to factors like maternity laws, affordability and happiness.

Surprise surprise, the Scandinavian cities took out the top five, with Copenhagen, Denmark being crowned number one. It is one of the safest, happiest cities in the world, with affordable housing and excellent maternity/paternity laws, with an overall score of 8.64.

Thirteen of out of the top twenty best cities for families are in Europe, with three of them Canadian cities, three Australian and one from New Zealand making up the remainder.

Sydney came in at number thirteen with an overall score of 7.75. Breaking it down, the score for activities for kids came in at 9.33, Happiness at 8.64, healthcare 7.09, education system 6.89, 4.87 for housing. What really brought the score down was maternity/paternity laws with a low score of 1.3.  Sydney did come in number one for the most kid-friendly airport with a perfect score of 10.00.

Melbourne came in close behind with a rank of fifteen and an overall score of 7.75 – sharing with Sydney and Helsinki, Finland. Melbourne scored 8.88 for activity for kids, 8.64 for happiness, 7.09 for healthcare, 8.24 for education ad 5.54 for housing. They shared a score of 1.3 for maternity laws with Sydney.

Brisbane was not too far behind coming in eighteenth and overall score of 7.68. They also got a low score of 1.30 for maternity laws, but ranked higher than Sydney and Melbourne for housing with a score of 8.09. Activity for kids scored 6.64, happiness 8.64, healthcare 7.09, and education 6.59.

The brains behind the study (besides the parents) is the online real estate portal for home buyers and sellers Homeday, who commissioned this study in order to help potential property buyers and sellers make data-led decisions.

The factors to determine the best city were chosen based on what parents confirmed were important when choosing a city to settle in, and give an overview of the best cities for young families to both live and visit around the world.
