Tokyo City has strengthened its ties with the Australian travel industry leading its largest-ever delegation of tourism suppliers for major B2B events in Sydney and Melbourne.
With demand for Japan continuing to soar among Australian travellers, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) showcased the capital’s latest offerings.
The 20-plus-strong delegation, led by Tokyo Metropolitan Government senior director tourism division, Nobuhiko Emura, featured representatives from Tokyo’s hotels & ryokans, tour operators, cultural attractions, guiding services, transportation, and retail. These key tourism businesses gathered to connect with Australian travel professionals through a series of face-to-face meetings, product updates, and cultural experiences.
Held on 5 August at Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park, followed by a Melbourne event on 7 August at Rydges Melbourne, the Tokyo City Promotion 2025 events offered a rare one-stop opportunity for the local travel trade to engage directly with Tokyo-based tourism suppliers. Attendees were also treated to hands-on cultural workshops including calligraphy and ikebana and capped off the day with Japanese cuisine and entertainment.
In Sydney, celebrity chef and TV host Adam Liaw hosted a live cooking demonstration of gyudon and shared personal insights into Tokyo’s ever-evolving culinary culture. Melbourne attendees were treated to a spectacular Japanese drumming performance by Wadaiko Rindo, celebrating the depth and energy of Tokyo’s cultural scene.
Boom numbers to Japan
The events come at a time of extraordinary growth in Australians travelling to Japan. In 2024, 920,200 Australians visited Japan, representing a 50.1 per cent increase on the previous year. Demand remains strong in 2025, with 567,200 arrivals from Australia in the first six months alone, a further 22.8 per cent increase on last year’s record-breaking numbers.
“This delegation reflects Tokyo’s strong commitment to the Australian market, and we’re thrilled to see such enthusiastic engagement from the local travel trade and positive connections being forged,” Tokyo Tourism representative in Australia, Alison Roberts-Brown, said.
The Tokyo City Promotion events equipped agents and travel professionals with updated knowledge, resources, and personal contacts to help craft even more tailored and memorable Tokyo itineraries for their clients.
And, Tokyo Tourism Sydney office has a grand prize of a trip to Tokyo and lots of other prizes to be won on their recently relaunched Tokyo Tourism Expert platform.
