Brisbane’s bid to host the 2032 Olympics has been given the green light by Tourism Australia.
The bid is aided by the huge infrastructure taking place at Brisbane’s Queen’s Wharf, scheduled to be complete by 2022.
According to The Courier Mail, Tourism Australia managing director John O’Sullivan said the $3 billion Queen’s Wharf which will also house a new resort, as well as the second runway at Brisbane Airport would give the city the biggest tourism lift since Expo 88.
“An Olympic bid would be really good for Brisbane,” O’Sullivan said.
“It will allow Brisbane to take advantage of these high value assets like Queen’s Wharf.”
O’Sullivan also said that while Brisbane was well positioned it needed to work on developing a night-time economy and establishing better transport links between the city and Moreton Bay beauty spots.
The news follows Brisbane finalising a start date of its Luggage Point cruise terminal.
At present, the terminal is slated to finished work by late 2019, and will allegedly be capable of housing the largest cruise ships in the world.
The go-ahead has taken 18 months of negotiations and needed a $158 million project approval fee from the government to begin.
