Tourism Austria marked six decades of The Sound of Music with a celebration at The Golden Age Cinema in Surry hills.

The event transported guests straight to the Austrian Alps with an evening steeped in tradition, nostalgia, and cinematic magic. They were treated to an array of Austrian-inspired food and drinks, evoking the flavours of Salzburg. The cozy yet elegant atmosphere of The Golden Age Cinema perfectly complemented the evening’s theme, creating a sense of timeless warmth.

Highlighting the evening was an unexpected thrilling appearance by Nicolas Hammond, who portrayed Friedrich von Trapp in the 1965 film. Hammond, who shared the screen with Julie Andrews, reflected fondly on his time working on the movie, sharing behind-the-scenes anecdotes that captivated the audience. His presence added a deeply personal touch to the celebration, reminding fans of the movie’s enduring legacy.

Tourism Austria used the event to unveil an exciting announcement: the launch of the country’s first The Sound of Music Museum. Set to open in Austria in 2026, the museum will feature elements of the films costumes, props, photographs and never seen before footage as well as a real-life Von Trapp family exhibit, offering fans an immersive journey through the history and cultural impact of the beloved story.

The evening beautifully celebrated the magic of The Sound of Music, which has touched audiences for generations. From Hammond’s surprise appearance to the announcement of the new museum, guests left with a renewed appreciation for the timeless charm of the von Trapp family’s tale.

Tourism Austria’s event was not just a tribute to the film but also an invitation to explore the landscapes and culture that inspired it, ensuring that the legacy of The Sound of Music continues to thrive for years to come.
