Tourism New Zealand got crafty on World Emoji Day by coming up with its own special emoji combination.

When World Emoji Day rolled around on Saturday, New Zealand’s official tourism body said it felt left out.

“Today is World Emoji Day and it seems like everyone can celebrate with their national animal,” Tourism New Zealand said on Facebook and Twitter.

“America has their bald eagle. England has their lion. Scottland apparently has their unicorn. Yet New Zealand is still waiting for our beloved flightless kiwi bird to join the emoji party.”

Tourism NZ decided to take matters into its own hands and “officially” apply for a kiwi emoji to be added. Twice.

“But sadly, we haven’t heard back,” the brand said in its post.

“So, being quite an inventive bunch, we’ve come up with a workaround – the key-wi!”

Tourism NZ asked its loyal followers to start using the emojis to help gain support for its application.

“Who knows, maybe third time will be a charm,” the post said.

Loads of social media users got on the bandwagon, with 17,000 people liking the brand’s post on Facebook and 5,800 leaving comments (mostly) supporting the move.

However, the brand did need to clear things up for one Twitter user.
