As artificial intelligence continues to shape careers and offices around the world, Travellers Choice this month sent its board and senior management to an ‘AI Bootcamp’.

Managing Director Christian Hunter said the aim of the full-day session was to achieve a standardised level of “AI fluency” across the Board and management.

“Prior to the bootcamp, Board members had different levels of expertise and exposure to AI,” Hunter said.

“Some had undertaken training and engaged in AI research initiatives outside of travel. Others had only encountered the technology sporadically.

“By bringing everyone up to the same speed, as a Board we are now better equipped to identify the risks and opportunities that AI presents to our company, and make strategic decisions based on that enhanced knowledge.”

The full-day workshop was conducted by renowned technology educator Sami Mäkeläinen, founder of Transition Level, a company dedicated to helping Australian companies adapt to an increasingly automated future. Topics included the nature of AI, its current and potential applications, and some of the regulatory and ethical issues surrounding the technology.

“Sami has an ability to explain AI in a way that adds value, rather than baffles,”  says Hunter. “He also went into great depth to understand our industry and how our members may be exposed to AI into the future.

“Travellers Choice has always been at the cutting edge of technology and we are constantly looking at how we can apply new and emerging technology in ways that enhance our value proposition and make a difference to our members.”

The AI bootcamp preceded the Board’s annual full-day strategy session – held this year in Perth – during which directors review the company’s strategic plans and objectives.

“As always, the ultimate aim is to continually create, protect and return value to our members shareholders,” says Hunter.
