A recent study identified the best nudist beaches in the world and it was good news for freedom-loving Aussies, with two Australian beaches making it to the top of the list.
Experts from Emisil.com identified the world’s best beaches for nudists by factoring in categories such as safety index, average sunshine hours, summer water temperature, Blue Flag status, and popularity on Google.
Plakias Beach in Crete is the top nudist beach, with 50M Google searches. It was followed by Zlatni Rat in Croatia with 7,521,360 searches and Haulover Beach, Miami with 23,366,930 searches.
The Aussie beaches might not have been at the top of the list but they were definitely there. Maslin Beach in Adelaide was named as the seventh top destination with a composite score of 70.6, followed by Cobblers Beach in Sydney which scored eighth for the top nudist beaches in the world.
A spokesperson from Emisil commented on the findings, “Clothing-optional beaches with high safety are particularly popular among naturists. Factors such as lifeguards, clean water, and low crime rates make a beach appealing for those seeking a clothing-optional experience. It’s not surprising that we see a correlation between a high safety index and the highest Google search count for Plakias Beach in Crete, which receives over 50 million searches annually. This clearly shows that naturists are actively seeking out safe and clean environments to experience nature nude.”
Notably, Tyagarah Beach in Byron Bay was not on the list. The popular beach was shut down in April of this year in a surprise move NSW Parks and Wildlife Service.

Byron Bay Shire Council declared Tyagarah Beach a “clothing optional” beach back in 1998. However, it was not their right to do so. A land survey completed in 2023 found that NSW Parks and Wildlife Service (NWSP) is the managing authority of the beach.
In a letter to Byron Bay Shire Council, NSW Parks and Wildlife Service said the beach was “not consistent with the values the reserve is managed under.”
“For example, people are accessing not only the beach but also the dune and hind-dune which is creating environmental issues. The continuation of a clothes optional area in Tyagarah Nature Reserve is not supported by NPWS,” it said.
The beach is due to shut at the end of this month.
