Two dead after zodiac capsizes on Antarctic cruise

Two people have died during a shore excursion on a Quark Expeditions cruise after a zodiac boat capsized.

According to a statement from Quark, the tragic accident occurred during a zodiac excursion from the ship World Explorer, chartered by the company, near Cape Lookout, Elephant Island in the Antarctic on 15 November.

“A zodiac boat carrying six passengers and two expedition staff overturned near shore, tragically resulting in two fatalities,” the statement read.

“The weather conditions were light winds and smooth sea state, and indications are the accident was caused by a breaking wave. The other four passengers and two staff recovered under the care and observation of our doctors and medical staff on board.”

Quark advised that the ship has since returned to port and all passengers have disembarked.

“We are in close contact with the next of kin and our priority right now is supporting them, our passengers and crew while we investigate further,” the statement continued.

“We will continue to work with, and offer our assistance to, those involved during this difficult time, including full cooperation with the relevant authorities.”
