SkyUp Airlines has given its cabin crew uniform a modern update that ditches pencil skirts and heeled shoes for a loose suit, white t-shirt and Nike sneakers.

Many female flight attendants have to work long hours at what can be a labour intensive job while wearing tight fit, restrictive clothing and high heels, which, if you think about it, doesn’t make a lot of sense.

After researching the history of cabin crew uniforms, the privately-owned Ukrainian carrier switched the “conservative” approach for a chic alternative that is more appropriate for the job.

“We found out that despite the fact that the image of a female flight attendant is very romanticized, their job demands a lot of physical training,” the head of the SkyUp Airlines marketing department, Marianna Grygorash, told Reuters.

The new uniform, which will officially launch in October 2022, now features a loose orange suit with pants instead of a skirt, a t-shirt, silk scarf and white Nike sneakers.

Braids will replace the tight buns and ponytail hairstyles for cabin crew with long hair.

The airline also plans to launch a new uniform for male flight crew, swapping vests and shirts for a light suit and t-shirt and black Nike sneakers.

“God forbid, but if a crew has to do a landing in water and an evacuation, heels can damage the ladder and it won’t be very comfortable to swim in a skirt,” a senior flight attendant at SkyUp told Reuters.

“Shoes on heels look beautiful, I do not argue with that, but feet suffer and swell by the end of the flight. Sneakers are absolutely cool.”
