Friday 2pm Tropical Cyclone Alfred could intensify again before making landfall on Saturday morning as it continues its path towards South East Queensland. It is currently 150km east of Brisbane and 125km northeast of Gold Coast and is moving at 8km/h.
It is now expected to hit the mainland at 10am tomorrow (Saturday), north of Brisbane, most likely over the Moreton Bay Islands, before crossing the Queensland coast, between Noosa and Beenleigh.
Alfred is expected to weaken to a category 1 system as it crosses the mainland.
Double Island Point in Queensland to Grafton in NSW are expected to be impacted. That includes Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay and Ballina
South East Queensland residents should be prepared to lose power today (Friday) and could be without power for up to a week.
South East Queensland residents have been urged to conserve their drinkable water in the days after Tropical Cyclone Alfred hits the coast.
Thursday 5:30pm There are major airlines schedule changes as a result of Tropical Cyclone Alfred with Brisbane Airport also announcing it’s last departure, Virgin Australia Flight 1246, arrived at Rockhampton at 4pm. All flights are cancelled for the rest of the day.

Qantas and Jetstar are not expected to fly in or out of Ballina until at least Sunday morning, while Gold Coast Airport is shut, with no reopening time scheduled.
Qantas and Rex also cancelled all flights in and out of Coffs Harbour on Thursday. Qantas said it expected to resume flights to this destination on Friday.
Qantas and Jetstar
Brisbane (BNE) – Qantas and Jetstar flights will be suspended from mid-afternoon Thursday, with international operations suspended until at least midday Saturday local time and domestic operations suspended until at least Sunday morning local time.
Gold Coast (OOL) – Qantas and Jetstar operations are currently suspended, with domestic operations suspended until at least Sunday morning local time and Jetstar international operations suspended until at least midday Saturday local time.
Ballina (BNK) – Qantas and Jetstar operations are currently suspended until at least Sunday morning local time.
Coffs Harbour (CFS) – Qantas flights are expected to resume on Friday.
At this time, flights to and from Sunshine Coast (MCY) and Hervey Bay (HVB) continue to operate. We’ll continue to review and make changes as required.
Virgin Australia
“Virgin Australia will pause operations to and from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ballina on Friday (7 March) and Saturday (8 March), and resume flights on Sunday (9 March), as soon as it is safe to do so,” a Virgin spokesperson said. “We are proactively reaching out to all impacted guests booked to travel during this period to reaccommodate their flights with us.
“While closely monitoring the weather systems and forecasted timing, we are preparing our operation with a focus on ensuring our people are safe, and our aircraft are stored appropriately.
“We encourage all guests flying to or from South East Queensland and northern NSW this week to regularly check their flight status on the Virgin Australia website for updates.”
Brisbane, QLD (BNE) – VA will operate a limited schedule to and from Brisbane on Thursday (6 March) until 4:00pm (AEST), before pausing operations until Sunday (9 March).
Gold Coast, QLD (OOL) – Flights suspended from Wednesday afternoon (5 March) until Sunday (9 March).
Ballina, NSW (BNK) – Flights to and from Ballina (BNK) are suspended until Sunday (9 March).
It is moving aircraft to Melbourne Airport, Sydney Airport, and to its Brisbane hangar, so that they are not on the apron at Brisbane Airport on Thursday evening.
Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ballina operations are expected to resume on Sunday, following consultation with airports, our meteorologists, and authorities.
Guests travelling on Virgin Australia services to or from Ballina, Brisbane, Bundaberg, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast airports from Tuesday, 4 March to Monday, 10 March 2025 (inclusive) can choose to move their flight to a new date within 14 days (from the original departure date) free of charge, or, cancel and request a travel credit by contacting our Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 or their travel agent. The original ticket must have been issued on or before Monday, 3 March 2025. Moving to a new flight is subject to availability.
