Variety Cruises has launched exclusive Volcanoes of Italy cruise, a seven-night adventure aboard the Variety Voyager and hosted by National Geographic Explorer and TV host George Kourounis.

The cruise departs Naples, Italy on 4 July 2026, exploring the Mediterranean’s cultures and landscapes as guests learn about Mount Vesuvius, Stromboli, and Mount Etna from both the deck and on shore. It concludes in Valleta, Malta on 11 July.

National Geographic Explorer George Kourounis, who has spent 25 years documenting extreme forces of nature and natural phenomena worldwide, will host the trip. He is additionally an Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, a Fellow of The Explorers Club, and an internationally recognized TV host, known for his engaging storytelling and ability to explain complex natural processes in an accessible and fascinating way.

“As a professional explorer who specializes in documenting extreme forces of nature, I’m really excited to be teaming up with Variety Cruises in Italy this summer for this grand adventure,” Kourounis said. “I really love the company’s balance of adventure and comfort, especially on a small vessel where you get that personal touch.”

This unique themed cruise combines stunning Mediterranean landscapes, active volcanoes, ancient history, and expert-led insight. From the shadow of Mount Vesuvius to the fiery displays of Stromboli and Etna, this voyage offers an immersive experience into Italy’s powerful geological forces—enhanced by exclusive onboard lectures and storytelling from one of the world’s leading extreme explorers.

During the cruise, George will also guide guests to spot rare atmospheric phenomena and be available to help guests improve their photography—whether using professional cameras or smartphones.

“This new limited-edition itinerary from Variety Cruises promises to be the hottest cruise of the year – both figuratively and literally,” Variety Cruises CEO Filippos Venetopoulos said. “Guests can feel the heat of several volcanoes while exploring on shore, then cool down in the Mediterranean with a dip off the back of the ship, all while witnessing these impressive, smoldering peaks as the backdrop. It’s an ideal experience for intrepid and curious travellers who appreciate the serenity and charm of a small ship adventure.”

Rates for the Volcanoes of Italy seven-night cruise start at EUR3,500 (around AU$6,010) per person per person and include:

  • Accommodation in double or twin cabins with private SH/WC & air conditioning
  • Expert insights and lectures by guest host, National Geographic Explorer George Kourounis
  • Half-board: buffet breakfast and one meal daily, including a welcome cocktail, captain’s dinner and several themed meals
  • Beach towels and fishing and snorkeling equipment
  • Kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and water toys (subject to availability)
  • Coffee, tea and water
  • English-speaking cruise escort

Onboard the 36 cabin M/Y Variety Voyager mega yacht – which completed a refurbishment in 2025 – passengers can enjoy a 360° Sun Deck for taking in the views and relaxing, a premium bar and lounge, and a spa & fitness suite, complete with gym equipment and sauna.

Variety Cruises is known for offering access to destinations often unreachable by larger ships, appealing to the increasing traveler interest in discovering hidden gems and less crowded locations. The company, which has a vision to create a better world at sea, hosts around 50 guests per sailing with a crew of 20 and provides its customers with experiences that are in-depth and community-driven while leaving a minimal footprint behind. Variety Cares, the company’s nonprofit foundation, supports initiatives striving for clean oceans, gender equality and education.
