Passengers on Viking Orion, which is currently docked at White Bay in Sydney today, had to evacuate following reports of a fire.
Approximately 600 people on board were escorted off the ship at about 8:10am this morning. The fire, which is reported to have impacted three cabins, was extinguished at 8:40am.
Photos of the cruise ship showed black smoke billowing out of one of the ship’s windows.
“We can confirm that a small fire occurred in a guest stateroom on-board the Viking Orion while the ship was docked in Sydney,” a Viking Orion spokesperson said.
“The fire was extinguished within minutes by the ship’s crew, and there were no injuries.
“Viking is fully investigating the incident, and early reports indicate the cause of the fire was electrical, possibly from a corded device.
“All scheduled operations on-board the Viking Orion have continued, and we do not expect any disruption to the current voyage.”
Following the incident, an email was sent to prospective attendees of a travel trade inspection of the ship that was going to take place at 2:45pm today cancelling the event.
The event would have featured travel media, travel agents and associates of Viking Cruises.
