Virgin Australia has released its 2026 Annual Leave Hacks Guide, designed to help Australians more than double their time off without using additional leave.

The guide outlines how travellers can strategically align annual leave with national and state-based public holidays and long weekends to extend time away from work. By planning carefully, Australians can turn 12 statutory days of annual leave into up to 29 days off at no extra cost.

The release serves as a timely reminder for travellers to plan ahead, particularly as many return to work following the holiday period. The guide pairs smart leave planning with Virgin Australia’s domestic and international network, offering options ranging from tropical escapes to city breaks.

January – Australia Day

Take leave: 27–30 January (Tuesday–Friday)
Travel dates: Depart Friday evening, 23 January; return Sunday, 1 February 2026
Outcome: Nine-day holiday using four days of annual leave

January is peak summer in Tasmania, making it ideal for an east coast road trip or a long weekend in Hobart. Travellers can take advantage of afternoon flights from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane for a cool-climate culinary escape.

Alternatively, the Whitsundays offer calm waters and hot beach days. Virgin Australia operates services to Proserpine and Hamilton Island, providing access to Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef.

April – Easter

Take leave: 7–10 April (Tuesday–Friday)
Travel dates: Depart Thursday evening, 2 April; return Sunday, 12 April 2026
Outcome: Ten-day holiday using four days of annual leave

April marks the start of Samoa’s dry season, making it an ideal time for an off-the-grid island escape just a few hours from Brisbane. Travellers can relax in beachfront accommodation or explore waterfalls and volcanic landscapes.

Closer to home, Cairns delivers warm weather and clear reef conditions. Early flights allow travellers to maximise time on the Great Barrier Reef, with options to explore the Daintree Rainforest or ride the Skyrail over Kuranda.

December – Christmas and New Year

Take leave: 28–31 December 2026
Travel dates: Depart Friday, 25 December; return Sunday, 3 January 2027
Outcome: Ten-day holiday using four days of annual leave

December brings dry weather and warm waters to Vanuatu, located just under three hours from Brisbane. The destination offers reef experiences, cultural activities and relaxed island hospitality.

For those preferring to stay domestic, the Gold Coast remains a popular end-of-year option, combining beaches, theme parks and nightlife. Virgin Australia operates frequent services to Coolangatta from major cities nationwide.

Virgin Australia’s eligible fares include Velocity Frequent Flyer Points and Status Credits, allowing travellers to earn rewards while planning their leave more strategically.
