Virgin Australia has announced updates to its carry-on baggage allowance – to 8kg – which will come into effect on 2 February 2026.

The carrier said the changes deliver clearer guidelines with simplified baggage allowances and will help improve overhead space availability to reduce delays, enhance safety, and create a smoother travel experience for guests.

“These changes are based on team member and guest feedback and will help deliver an enhanced onboard experience, while keeping the boarding process simple and consistent,” Virgin Australia Chief Operations Officer, Chris Snook, said.

“The result will be a smoother start to the journey and a more comfortable experience on board. We want your bag, where you sit.

“While these changes do not come into effect for our guests until February 2026, we wanted to let our loyal guests know well in advance and give our team members time to understand and implement the change,” Snook said.

Refreshed carry-on baggage allowance

Economy Class

  • One main standard carry-on bag, up to 8kg (streamlined to one main bag with a total weight increase of 1kg)
  • Plus, one small personal item such as a handbag, or laptop bag, or small backpack that can fit under the seat in front
  • Business Class, Gold, Forever Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus Velocity members, and Economy X guests:
Up to two carry-on bags with a total of up to 14kg (one piece may weigh up to 8kg)
  • Plus, one small personal item such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack that can fit under the seat in front

Personal items: simplified dimensions and descriptions for clarity

  • Maximum dimensions: L45cm x W33cm x H20cm
  • Must fit under the seat in front

Infant carry-on allowance:

  • A collapsible stroller counts as one standard carry-on item and must fit within L56cm x W36cm x H23cm
  • Adults travelling with infants may bring one additional small personal item (e.g. nappy bag) for essential baby products.
  • Guests with infants can still check in up to three infant items free of charge (as checked baggage)

The refreshed carry-on baggage allowance has also been benchmarked against competitor and global airlines and applies to all travel from 2 February 2026. Guests with bookings for travel on or after this date will be sent communications regarding this change.
