Visa is making a play for travel. The payment provider has launched travel platform Visa Destinations, which operates in 10 cities worldwide. It is a deliberate push by the payments company into the travel and experiences sector.
The platform is now live in Paris, London, Dubai, Milan, Rome, Mexico City, New York City, Miami, San Francisco and Thailand, with additional destinations planned later this year.
The expansion positions Visa beyond its traditional role processing payments, placing it instead at the centre of how travellers plan and book trips. The mobile-first platform offers cardholders curated recommendations across dining, entertainment, culture, hospitality, wellness, shopping and transport.
Visa said the move responds to changing travel behaviour, with its Global Travel Intentions Study 2026 finding 66 per cent of Asia Pacific travellers intend to travel for global concert tours and 54 per cent for sports events.
T. R. Ramachandran, head of products and solutions for Asia Pacific at Visa, said travel demand across the region remained strong and that travellers were becoming more deliberate in how they planned trips.
The platform is exclusive to Visa cardholders, giving the company a direct incentive to grow card usage through travel-related perks. Benefits include priority access to attractions such as the Top of the Rock Observation Deck in New York and the Louvre in Paris, with premium cardholders on Visa Infinite and Visa Signature tiers receiving additional benefits.
To build out the platform, Visa has signed anchor partnerships with Global Blue, Star Alliance and Trip.com Group, giving cardholders access to tax-free shopping refunds, multi-airline benefits across Star Alliance’s 26 member airlines, and curated offerings through Trip.com’s booking network.
The expansion reflects a broader strategy by Visa to deepen its presence in digital commerce and cross-border payments, while positioning the company as a beneficiary of growth in global tourism spending rather than solely a payments processor.
For travel and tourism businesses, the move signals a shift in how payment providers are competing for relevance in the sector, with platforms like Visa Destinations designed to keep cardholders engaged with the brand throughout the trip lifecycle, not just at the point of payment.
Visa Destinations is accessible exclusively through the company’s mobile app.
