Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer has been projected wearing a facemask to promote self-care during the coronavirus pandemic and as a tribute to healthcare workers.
The currently-closed famous Brazilian landmark, which overlooks Rio de Janeiro, has been a constant fixture of hope in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
And now, Christ the Redeemer has been illuminated with an important health message. A face mask has been projected onto the statue, along with #MascaraSalva, which translates to ‘Masks save lives’.
According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, Brazil has registered more than 115,000 cases of COVID-19, and at least 7,958 deaths from the novel virus.
Standing on Mount Corcovado, the statue has overlooked Rio de Janeiro for 90 years and has often been used as a tribute to frontline healthcare workers.
On Easter Sunday, Christ the Redeemer was illuminated to look like a doctor, with the flags of several countries affected by the coronavirus pandemic also projected onto the monument.
The city’s archbishop, Dom Orani Tempesta, performed a mass at the base of the statue during the light show, in which he paid tribute to medical workers, alongside various messages of thanks in multiple languages, according to multiple reports.
Pictures of medical professionals wearing scrubs and putting on face masks were also projected, with the slogan ‘Fique Em Casa’ (‘Stay at Home’) projected on the statue’s arm.
