Ever wondered where flight attendants sleep? Or have you seen an overhead storage bin with no handle and wondered what it was for?
Virgin Australia has spilled the beans on the secret lives of its cabin crew in a seven-minute video shared on its Facebook where a flight attendant shows viewers around a secret compartment above economy class on one of its Boeing 777 jets.
The video also reveals how flight attendants escape the compartment in case of an emergency.
In the video, the attendant, who introduces himself as Blair, tells viewers the compartment has eight bunks.
“As you can see there’s not a lot of space up here … similar to a little Japanese capsule hotel,” he said.
“The bunks are very comfortable, they come with a pillow, a duvet and a blanket with a nice mattress as well, so it’s very comfortable. We do have seatbelts on-board, which have to be worn at all times, there’s an airflow switch and also a reading light. You can read a book or watch a movie.”
From there Blair moves onto the emergency exit which is hidden underneath a bunk and acts as a trap door leading to the economy cabin.
“If you’ve ever wondered why there’s an overhead locker without a handle on it, that’s why,” he said.
Blair then answers a series of questions posed by Facebook users covering everything from the temperature, privacy and noise level of the compartment.
Blair signs off by demonstrating how flight attendants exit through the emergency trap door which involves a metal pole and is truly something to behold.
