Acacia Africa has released its first Accommodation Impact Report, revealing that 72 per cent of its accommodation portfolio delivers measurable traveller impact across conservation, community, culture and experience.

The report assessed 50 properties across 11 countries – South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda – using two qualitative frameworks designed to capture both the breadth and depth of impact.

Properties were categorised into four tiers: Experience Leaders, Journey Highlights, Journey Connections and Route Contributors.

Community connection emerged as the strongest pillar, with 80 per cent of properties engaging directly with local people. Three-quarters of stays offered immersive experiences, while two-thirds were linked to conservation efforts such as wildlife or habitat protection. More than half of properties now offer structured cultural immersion – a figure the report flags as a rising trend.

Standout examples include Malealea Lodge in Lesotho, where pony trekking doubles as storytelling, and Mlilwane Rest Camp in Eswatini, which offers stays in traditional beehive huts alongside guided village walks and chiefdom visits. At Meserani Snake Park in Tanzania, guests can access a free Maasai health clinic, a women’s craft centre and guided tours of the Maasai Cultural Museum. The report also highlights how smaller, grassroots properties can create standout traveller experiences while directly benefiting local communities.

Acacia Africa sales and marketing manager Arno Delport said the findings reinforced the company’s belief that accommodation plays an active role in the travel experience, rather than serving merely as a backdrop.

“Whether that’s supporting local communities, creating opportunities for cultural exchange or bringing travellers closer to wildlife, every stay has the potential to add meaning to the road ahead,” Delport said.
