Young Aussies are turning Japanese

Japan is on the hot list of young Aussie travellers, with numbers soaring in at lightning speed.

According to Longeran Research, who delved into millennial travel trends down under, young Aussies are most inspired to travel to the cities of Tokyo (56%) when planning a trip to Asia, with Japan’s Osaka coming in third at 34%.

Contiki has reported significant growth that has exceeded its target level of passengers to Japan, especially since the announcement of its new 13-day Japan Unrivalled itinerary, resulting in doubling capacity within a year of launch.

“We introduced Japan Unrivalled as a result of strong demand from 18-35’s to experience exotic and unique cities in Japan, including Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka, and the response so far has been unbelievable,” Contiki Australia’s managing director Katrina Barry said.

“We’re now looking to the year ahead and planning to increase departures and double capacity for 2016, especially around the Cherry Blossom season which has been particularly popular.”

To celebrate Contiki’s launch into Japan, the company sent MasterChef Hayden Quinn and fellow foodie Khalil Khouri of foodporn.com, alongside Australian fitness and fashion bloggers Sjana Earp and Kate Boissett on the first departure of the new itinerary on March 14 this year.

Over eight days, the crew experienced a melting pot of culture, history, tradition, food and of course, karaoke in Japan, including the opportunity to dine at Tokyo’s infamous Robot Restaurant.

Contiki has now released four videos that follow the adventures of the Contiki group as they uncover some of the unique tastes, styles and rituals across Japanese cities of Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka, bringing to life the experiences that are making Japan such a popular destination in Asia for young Aussies.
